If Marrakech is all heat, noise and motion, Essaouira is its opposite: cool, salty and unhurried. The old Portuguese trading port sits about three hours west on the Atlantic, behind honey-coloured ramparts studded with cannons, its whitewashed medina laced with blue shutters and the constant cry of gulls. It has long been a favourite escape for those who find the Red City overwhelming, and a full day here is one of the most rewarding excursions you can make from Marrakech.
The drive itself is part of the appeal. The road threads through the argan belt — the only place on earth where these gnarled trees grow in abundance — and most tours pause at a women's cooperative to watch the nuts being cracked and pressed by hand. On arrival, the day is yours: wander the UNESCO-listed medina, climb the Skala sea bastion, watch the blue fishing boats unload at the harbour, and lunch on the morning's catch grilled at the quayside. For something more active, the wide beaches just south at Sidi Kaouki draw surfers, kitesurfers and horse riders.
Below are the four ways we most often arrange a visit, from the standard full-day from Marrakech to focused half-days for travellers already on the coast. A single day is enough to fall for Essaouira's laid-back charm, though many wish they had stayed the night. We arrange both shared and private departures, so you can travel cheaply with a group or set your own pace with a private driver.
