Skala de la Ville — the cannon ramparts
The most photographed corner of Essaouira is the Skala de la Ville, the 18th-century sea bastion that juts into the Atlantic on the medina's northwest edge. A row of European bronze cannons lines the upper walkway, and on a blustery afternoon the spray comes right over the walls. Below, the woodcarvers' cooperative occupies the arched vaults — thuja root chess sets and marquetry boxes are far better value here than in the souk lanes. Staying near the Skala means accepting the wind tunnel effect, but sunsets are extraordinary.
