Free guided tours in Morocco’s medinas are real, growing, and — if you pick the right operator — genuinely useful. The model is simple: no upfront fee, a tip at the end. It arrived in Marrakech and Fes from the European free-tour tradition, took root slowly through Airbnb Experiences and local social media, and has expanded noticeably since 2024. There are now several operators running daily departures in both cities.
That said, the word "free" covers a wide range of experiences. At one end: a knowledgeable, state-licensed guide who gives you a crisp two-hour introduction to the medina’s layout, history, and craft traditions with minimal commercial pressure. At the other: an unlicensed tout who leads you on a circuitous route through every cooperative in the neighbourhood and then asks for a "donation" that is more pointed than implied. Knowing the difference before you show up matters.
Below you will find city-by-city logistics, a side-by-side comparison with licensed private guides, honest tipping norms, and the situations where spending 400–800 MAD on a proper private guide is simply the better call.
