Marrakech has some of the most beautiful urban roofscapes in Africa, and most of it is free to look at. The problem is that the best-known spots — the terrace cafés ringing Djemaa el-Fna — have a quiet drink minimum built in. That is not a scam; a 35 MAD mint tea for a front-row sunset seat over the square is entirely fair. But if you want the panorama without the transaction, the city obliges.
The free vantage points tend to be less obvious: a garden berm on the far side of an orchard, a stretch of city wall that nobody crowds around, a rooftop walkway that is technically part of the souk. Below is a specific list of seven spots — six genuinely free, one paid but worth calling out as the best elevated view in the city.
Timing matters as much as location. The medina is terracotta and cream; it looks dull in the flat midday light and extraordinary at golden hour. Most of these spots work best in the 90 minutes before sunset or in early morning before 9 am, when the heat is low and the crowds have not arrived.
