Is Morocco LGBTQ+ Friendly?

Same-sex sexual relations are illegal under Moroccan law, and society is generally conservative on the subject. There is no legal recognition of same-sex relationships, and public attitudes mean openness can attract hostility. This applies to locals and visitors alike.

Enforcement against tourists is uncommon, but the law exists and discretion is genuinely important — this isn’t a destination for openly out travel in the way parts of Europe are.

Many LGBTQ+ travellers do visit Morocco and have a great time by being discreet: avoiding public displays of affection (note that public affection is low-key even among straight couples here), and not discussing their relationship with strangers. Same-sex couples often book a room with two beds or a welcoming riad to avoid awkward questions.

Cosmopolitan areas, international hotels and design riads tend to be more relaxed and private; smaller towns and rural areas are more conservative.

Choose accommodation known to be welcoming, keep affection private in public, and use the same situational awareness any traveller would. Research is worth doing, and some travellers prefer LGBTQ+-experienced operators for peace of mind.

It’s a personal decision: plenty of LGBTQ+ visitors find Morocco rewarding and welcoming on a human level, while being mindful of the legal and social constraints. Know the trade-offs and travel in a way you’re comfortable with.
