The climb is graded PD (peu difficile) in alpinism terms when snow-covered, which means it is well within reach of fit hikers with crampons and an ice axe, but it is a step above the summer walk-up. Yes, both are non-negotiable from December through March, and sometimes into April. The South Couloir — the main summit slope — sits at a gradient of around 35–40 degrees and freezes solid overnight. At the Neltner Hut (3,207 m), December daytime temperatures typically sit between –2 °C and +5 °C; nights routinely fall to –10 °C to –15 °C. At the summit (4,167 m), expect –10 °C to –20 °C with wind chill. Imlil village (1,740 m) is warmer, often 5–12 °C by day, but can dip below freezing at night. January is colder than December; February can bring the heaviest snowfall. March days lengthen and warm slightly, making it arguably the finest winter ascent window.

Absolutely. Snowshoeing is excellent on the lower Imlil-to-Neltner section, a 7 km trail that gains around 1,400 metres of elevation through the Amsouzart Valley. In a good snow year (January–February), this trail sits under 40–60 cm of powder and becomes a proper snowshoe route with Atlas village views throughout. Many winter visitors opt to snowshoe to the hut and then switch to crampons for the technical summit push the next morning. Day-snowshoe circuits around Imlil and into the Azzaden Valley are also a gentler winter option that doesn’t require summit ambitions.

Moroccan law does not formally require a licensed guide for Toubkal, but every serious mountaineering organisation and the Moroccan guides association strongly recommend one in winter. Route conditions change rapidly, crevassed snow bridges form above the hut in heavy years, and navigation in cloud or after fresh snowfall is genuinely hazardous. A licensed Bureau des Guides guide in Imlil costs approximately 600–900 MAD per day (indicative) and brings local knowledge of current snow conditions, which is worth far more than the fee. For snowshoe touring below the summit, a local Berber guide from Imlil is sufficient and much less expensive.

Allow two full days minimum. Day one: drive or transfer from Marrakech to Imlil (1.5–2 hours), then hike or snowshoe from Imlil to the Neltner Hut (4–6 hours depending on snow depth).
