The trouble is that "desert tour from Marrakech" covers wildly different trips: a 40-minute hop to the stony Agafay, an overnight dash to the modest Zagora dunes, or a proper expedition to the 150-metre golden walls of Erg Chebbi some ten hours away. Knowing which one matches the days you actually have is the difference between a magical night under the stars and a punishing slog spent mostly in a minibus.
The single most important factor is distance. The big dunes you have seen on postcards — Erg Chebbi near Merzouga — sit on the far southeastern edge of the country. Reaching them and getting back inside two days means roughly twenty hours of driving for one sunset, which is why we steer most people toward the three-day format. If your schedule is genuinely tight, Zagora is the honest compromise: real Saharan sand, far less driving, and a camel trek into low dunes at a fraction of the time cost. And if you simply want to sleep in a desert camp without leaving the Marrakech orbit, the Agafay delivers a campfire, a star-filled sky and a sunrise over the Atlas without the marathon transfer.

If you only have one night, the Agafay overnight (about an hour from the city) or the Zagora 2-day tour are your options. The Agafay is a stony desert rather than dunes but needs almost no driving. For genuine Saharan dunes on a tight schedule, Zagora is the closest at roughly 6-7 hours each way.
Zagora is around 360 km (6-7 hours) and Merzouga / Erg Chebbi is around 560 km (9-10 hours). Because of the distance, single-night Merzouga tours are rushed; the 3-day, 2-night format is far more comfortable and is what most travellers choose.
Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) has the tallest, most photogenic dunes and the widest choice of camps, reached entirely by paved road. Erg Chigaga (beyond M'Hamid) is wilder and far quieter but needs a 4x4 for the last stretch and tends to cost more. First-timers usually prefer Erg Chebbi; repeat visitors and couples seeking solitude lean toward Chigaga.
October to April offers the most comfortable conditions, with warm days and cool nights. March-April and October-November are ideal. Avoid June to September, when desert daytime temperatures regularly exceed 45°C and the experience becomes unpleasant.
