Artistic, laid-back, bohemian
Essaouira's fortified medina faces the Atlantic behind 18th-century Portuguese ramparts. The trade winds that blow almost daily earned it the name "Wind City" and make it a magnet for kitesurfers and windsurfers. The medina — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 — holds art galleries, woodworking ateliers using local thuya wood, and a Gnaoua music scene that culminates in the annual Gnaoua World Music Festival each June.
