Start in Marrakech — it rewards slow arrivals. Spend the first morning adjusting: coffee in a riad courtyard, a gentle walk around the souks without a fixed plan. By day two, the kids are ready. Hire a local guide for the medina (non-negotiable with children — the lanes are genuinely disorienting and a good guide keeps the pace child-friendly). Hit the Ben Youssef Madrasa, then head to Jardin Majorelle for the afternoon, where the shaded paths and vivid blue walls keep younger ones engaged. Day three: a morning cooking class teaches kids to roll couscous and shape pastilla pastry, then a camel ride at the Palmeraie at sunset. Essaouira is the reward: a whitewashed walled city on the Atlantic where the wind keeps July temperatures at a tolerable 22–24°C. Children love the seagull-thronged fishing port, the rampart walk with cannon views, and the long sandy beach just south of the medina. Day nine is a full rest day: beach, a hammam for parents while kids swim, and evening fish grills at the port stalls (a whole sea bream runs around 80–100 MAD). Essaouira is calmer and easier to navigate than Marrakech — a deliberate decompression before the journey home.

Essaouira to Marrakech is about 2.5–3 hours on the direct N1 road — the drive is easy. Leave after a late breakfast and arrive in Marrakech with a couple of hours spare for last-minute souk shopping (spices, leather slippers, argan oil). Marrakech Menara Airport is 15 minutes from the city centre. If the flight is late, a farewell meal at a rooftop restaurant near the Koutoubia is a satisfying way to close the loop.
