2 Week Morocco Imperial Cities Itinerary

The four Imperial Cities are Marrakech, Fes, Meknes and Rabat — each served as the seat of a Moroccan dynasty at some point in history. Marrakech was the Almoravid and Almohad capital, Fes the Merenid and later Idrisid stronghold, Meknes the extraordinary project of Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, and Rabat the modern capital since the French Protectorate. Together they contain the country’s most important historic medinas, palaces, mosques and mausoleums.

Fourteen days is the comfortable minimum to do all four cities genuine justice. Marrakech needs four days, Fes deserves at least four to five, Meknes fits into one full day (usually as a side trip from Fes), and Rabat benefits from three to four days. Trying to rush the circuit in under ten days means spending most of each day on transport rather than exploring.

The most practical order is Marrakech first, then Fes, then Meknes (as a day trip from Fes), then Rabat. This runs roughly south to north and follows the shape of the country. If you are flying in and out of Casablanca, starting in Marrakech by train or private transfer and ending in Rabat (40 minutes from Casablanca by train) works perfectly as a one-way loop. Reversing the order works equally well.

Yes, and precisely because most visitors skip it. The Bab Mansour gate, the vast Heri es-Souani granaries and the medina surrounding Place el-Hedim are among the most atmospheric sites in Morocco with a fraction of Fes’s crowds. It is not as complex or intense as Fes el-Bali, which is exactly its appeal — it rewards a full day and pairs naturally with a morning visit to the Roman ruins at Volubilis, 28 km north.

It depends on the segment. The ONCF train is excellent on the Fes–Rabat–Casablanca axis and makes the Meknes day trip easy. The weakest link is Marrakech to Fes: there is no direct train, so the connection via Casa Voyageurs takes around nine hours with a change. For that leg specifically, a private car is far more rewarding — the route through the Middle Atlas, with cedar forests and cedar-monkey viewpoints, is one of the better drives in the country. A private guided vehicle also allows you to stop at Aït Benhaddou or the Ziz Valley en route.

It is possible but tight. The Marrakech-to-Fes route via the Sahara adds two to three days to an already full itinerary. If you want both the Imperial Cities circuit and a night in the desert, the cleanest solution is a private three-day Marrakech-to-Fes crossing via the Erg Chebbi dunes — you arrive in Fes having already seen the south, and then work your way through Meknes and Rabat over the remaining ten days. Expect long driving days on the desert segment.

For a mid-range independent trip — decent riads, restaurant meals, first-class train tickets and paid entrance fees — budget roughly 1,500–2,500 MAD per person per day, or around $150–250. A two-week total would therefore land between $2,100 and $3,500 per person before international flights. Private guided tours cost more but eliminate the logistics headache, and the cost difference often narrows once you factor in booking time, navigation stress and missed connections.
