7-Day Morocco Surf Itinerary

Morocco is genuinely one of the best surf destinations in the world within striking distance of Europe. The Atlantic coast between Agadir and Essaouira picks up consistent northwest groundswells from October through April and is warm enough (18–22 °C water) to surf in a 3/2 mm wetsuit without discomfort. The mix of uncrowded point breaks in Taghazout, raw beach breaks at Sidi Kaouki, and wind swell in Essaouira means there is something rideable for every level.

October to April is the classic Morocco surf season. Northwest groundswells peak between November and February, delivering the long, powerful walls that made Anchor Point famous. Crowds are thinner in November and March compared to the Christmas–January peak. Outside surf season (May–September), Taghazout goes very flat for surfing but Essaouira comes alive for kitesurfing and windsurfing as the Alizée wind kicks in reliably every afternoon.

Anchor Point is the headline act — a long right-hander that can peel for 200+ metres on a solid northwest swell, best for intermediate to advanced surfers. Hash Point is gentler and more forgiving, suiting intermediates. Banana Point in adjacent Tamraght offers similar long waves with less crowd pressure. Killer Point and Devil's Rock are heavy slabs reserved for experienced surfers on bigger swells. All these breaks are within a 10–15 minute walk or drive of Taghazout village.

From October to March, the onshore trade winds weaken enough to allow cleaner, surfable waves on the town beach and at Diabat 3 km south — this is the period to bring a surfboard. From April to October, the Alizée wind blows hard and consistently every afternoon, which is ideal for windsurfers and kite-surfers, but the choppy conditions make conventional surfing less enjoyable. If your visit falls in the wind season, plan the surfing days in Taghazout and treat Essaouira as a cultural stop.

The most practical option is a private vehicle — either a rented car or a private driver booked through a tour operator. The drive takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours via the N1 coastal road. Shared grand taxis run between Agadir and Essaouira but fitting a board bag alongside luggage and other passengers requires negotiation and extra cost. If you are on a surf trip with more than one board, booking a private vehicle for day five of this itinerary is genuinely worth it for the hassle it avoids.

Yes — Taghazout has one of Morocco's densest concentrations of surf camps, most offering weekly packages that include accommodation, daily lessons, board hire and sometimes meals. Indicative pricing runs from around 3,500–7,000 MAD (~$350–700) per person per week for a full-board package. Quality varies, so look for camps with qualified ISA or SAS-certified instructors. Panoramas Beach is the most commonly used beginner spot, with a sandy bottom and manageable shore break.

You can self-drive with a rental car if you are confident on Moroccan roads, but there are practical advantages to having a private driver or local guide for at least the Taghazout-to-Essaouira transfer day. Local knowledge on which breaks are working, help negotiating at petrol stations in smaller towns, and someone to watch gear while you paddle out all add value. A private driver for the transit day removes the board-transport problem entirely and lets you focus on reading the swell.
