Morocco Surf Season Calendar by Break

October through March is the peak surf season for Morocco's main point breaks, particularly around Taghazout and Anchor Point. This is when Atlantic low-pressure systems generate consistent NW groundswells with 10–18 second periods. The sweet spots are November to February for the biggest, most consistent waves, and October or March if you want quality surf with slightly smaller crowds and warmer air. April to September the swell drops off, though Imsouane and Essaouira remain rideable.

Summer at Taghazout is quiet and very small — the main point breaks at Anchor Point and Killer Point are largely flat from June to August, which actually makes the area less useful for beginners too. If you want to learn to surf in Morocco in summer, Imsouane Bay (Cathedral) is a better bet because it catches even residual swell and stays uncrowded. Essaouira's beach break also produces small waves, though the wind can make conditions choppy. Most surf camps around Taghazout operate year-round and move beginners to wherever the waves are working.

In winter — December through February especially — Anchor Point is one of the best right-hand point breaks in the world. A solid NW groundswell with 14-second-plus period produces long, sectioning walls that experienced surfers can ride for two hundred metres or more. The lower section can be hollow and powerful, demanding solid tube-riding ability. Water temperature sits around 17–19°C (63–66°F), so a 3/2 mm full wetsuit is comfortable. Crowds build around Christmas and New Year; mid-January through early February tends to be both quality and quiet.

Effectively yes — Imsouane Bay (Cathedral) is one of the few Morocco breaks that stays rideable even in summer. The bay's orientation and the gentle refracting action of the headland mean even a 0.5–1 m swell produces long, slow rides. From October to April the quality steps up considerably with proper groundswell, but the wave never fully switches off. This makes Imsouane the most beginner-friendly destination in Morocco for year-round access, and a reliable second option any time the bigger breaks are too large or onshore winds are blowing at Taghazout.

Morocco's Atlantic coast predominantly faces west to northwest, so the ideal swell direction for the main breaks around Taghazout and Agadir is NW to WNW — roughly 270–320 degrees. Swells in this window hit Anchor Point, Killer Point and Hash Point at the optimal angle. Imsouane's bay can also handle a more westerly swell (250–260 degrees). Pure southwesterly swells tend to be less productive and bring more onshore wind. The generating area is the North Atlantic: winter storms between Iceland and Azores produce the cleanest, most organised groundswells, which arrive with a 10–18 second period after travelling 1,500–2,500 km.

Both destinations receive swell from the same North Atlantic sources, but Morocco offers a genuinely different experience. Morocco's point breaks — particularly Anchor Point and Imsouane — are arguably longer and more accessible than most Canary Island equivalents at intermediate level. Morocco is also significantly cheaper: surf camp accommodation in Taghazout runs from around 500–900 MAD per night (indicative) versus comparable costs in the Canaries in euros. The Canaries have more consistent wind and are closer to mainland Europe, but Morocco wins on wave quality per price ratio, the cultural experience away from the beach, and the warm, uncrowded conditions in shoulder months.

Water temperatures range from about 17°C in February to 22°C in September, so you'll want a wetsuit for most of the year. October to April a 3/2 mm full suit is the standard choice — enough to keep you comfortable through long sessions without overheating on the paddle out. In May and early June a 2 mm shorty or spring suit works. July and August you can get away with boardshorts and a rashguard, though even then some surfers prefer a thin spring suit in the early morning when air temperatures are cooler. Booties are rarely needed.
