The Fake Guide / "Just Follow Me" Hustle
HighMarrakech medina, Fes el-Bali, Tangier port
What happens
A friendly local appears the moment you look confused, offers to show you the tanneries or a shortcut, and leads you through a carpet shop or argan-oil cooperative where they earn commission on every purchase — whether you buy or not.
How to sidestep it
Decline firmly but politely before walking. Say "no thank you, I have a guide" whether you do or not. If you do want an impromptu local guide, agree on a price upfront and get a name. Better still, book a licensed guide through your riad or a vetted tour operator before you arrive — the cost is modest (indicative: 300–500 MAD for a half-day) and the difference in quality is enormous.
