Morocco Wheelchair Accessibility: City-by-City Guide

Agadir is Morocco's most wheelchair-friendly city by a considerable margin. It was largely rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake to a modern grid plan, which means wide paved boulevards, a flat beach promenade stretching over 6 km, and most hotels built to 1980s–2000s resort standards with lifts and accessible bathrooms.

Essaouira's compact medina is more manageable than Marrakech or Fes but still presents real challenges. The main commercial artery, Avenue Mohammed Zerktouni and the Rue de la Skala, is reasonably wide and mostly paved. The seafront ramparts have gravel and uneven stone edges, but the lower corniche road beside the beach is flat and accessible.

Marrakech is the most visited city in Morocco and the hardest for wheelchair users. The historic medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site built over centuries without accessibility in mind. That said, key highlights are reachable with planning and the right transport: private vehicles can drop you directly at Djemaa el-Fna, and several riads and hotels now have accessible ground-floor rooms.

• Djemaa el-Fna square: large, mostly flat paved surface — accessible from the car drop-off edge
• Majorelle Garden: partially paved paths; the entry is manageable, but narrow side paths are rough gravel
• Medina souks: narrow, cobbled, crowded and split-level — an electric wheelchair or powered scooter is impractical
• Ville Nouvelle (Gueliz): wide flat pavements, modern cafes and restaurants — the accessible base for a Marrakech stay
• Several hotels in Gueliz and Hivernage have lifts, accessible rooms, and flat car access

Fes el-Bali is arguably the most challenging medina in the world for wheelchair users. It is the largest car-free medieval city in the world — which means no vehicles but also no curb cuts, no ramps, and a topology of steep alleyways that drop and climb without warning. The tanneries district, the Bou Inania Madrasa, and the Chouara tannery viewpoints all require navigating uneven stone steps.

• Fes el-Bali medina: almost entirely on foot, with narrow alleyways as tight as 80 cm in places
• Fes el-Jdid (Mellah area): slightly wider streets, still unpaved in parts

The blue city is built on a hillside in the Rif Mountains, which makes most of the medina steep and cobbled. The main square, Plaza Uta el-Hammam, is reached by a gradual ramp and is accessible, but most of the photogenic blue lanes above and around it involve steps. A visit to the square and the lower medina cafes is achievable; a full medina wander is not.
