Most atmospheric, some hustle
The Medina (Old City)
Tangier's medieval walled city is a tangle of whitewashed lanes, blue-tiled doorways, and spice-scented souks that tumble down the hillside towards the port. Staying here puts you inside the story — you wake to the call to prayer and step straight into the old Petit Socco square. The trade-off is navigation: the medina's lanes are genuinely confusing at first, taxis cannot reach most riads, and touts near the port gate can be persistent. Once you learn two or three landmark turns, though, it clicks into place surprisingly fast.
Good for
- Authentic atmosphere
- Riad-style accommodation
- Walking everywhere
- Photography
Watch out for
- Luggage tricky to drag through lanes
- Some pressure near port entrance
- Noisy in peak summer
