Best Medinas in Morocco’s Imperial Cities

Fes el-Bali is the strongest candidate for the title of Morocco’s 'best’ medina — it is the largest car-free urban zone in the world, home to the oldest leather tannery still in operation and more than 9,000 historic alleys. That said, best depends on what you want. Marrakech is more immediately electric and better suited to first-timers; Meknes rewards travellers who want authenticity without the crowds; Rabat suits those with limited time or who find sensory overload a barrier.

Fes el-Bali is roughly 280 hectares and contains around 9,000 streets, lanes and dead-ends, making it the larger and more complex maze of the two. Marrakech’s medina covers a larger total footprint (closer to 600 ha including the Mellah) but much of that is residential rather than souk. In practical terms, Fes feels harder to navigate and takes longer to explore; Marrakech is denser with tourist sights and easier to cover in a day or two.

Authenticity is a slippery word, but if you mean 'least adapted to tourism', Meknes wins easily — its souks still serve local trades and its alleys are quiet enough to hear your own footsteps. Fes el-Bali ranks second: craftspeople genuinely work there (the tanneries, the brass-beaters, the carpet weavers) alongside the tourist-facing economy. Marrakech’s medina has the most tourism infrastructure but also the highest visitor density; the lines between the souk for locals and the souk for tourists blurred long ago.

Two is the practical sweet spot for a one-week trip: most travellers pair Marrakech and Fes, covering the most dramatic contrasts with a desert tour or Atlas crossing in between. Three imperial-city medinas suit a 10-day itinerary well — add Meknes as a day trip from Fes (they are 60 km apart and connected by regular trains and CTM buses). Visiting all four only makes sense on trips of two weeks or longer, or if you are specifically interested in Islamic urban history.

Yes — not instead of Fes, but as a complement to it. Meknes is an easy 45-minute train ride from Fes, and the contrast is stark: where Fes feels relentlessly layered and overwhelming, Meknes is walkable, calm and surprisingly beautiful. Bab Mansour alone is worth the detour. Combine Meknes with a visit to the Roman ruins at Volubilis (30 min further by taxi, indicative MAD 150–200 return per car) and you have an excellent full day out of Fes.

Morocco’s four imperial cities — Fes, Marrakech, Meknes and Rabat — were each at some point the seat of a ruling dynasty and served as capitals of the kingdom. That history gave them outsized investment in monuments, palaces, city walls and grand gates (babs), all of which survive today. 'Regular' Moroccan cities like Casablanca or Agadir have their own medinas and character, but lack the dynastic heritage that makes the imperial four so architecturally dense. The term is a UNESCO-adjacent designation that has stuck in the travel industry.

Rabat and Meknes are comfortable to explore independently — both are compact and relatively easy to navigate. Marrakech is manageable solo, though the area around Djemaa el-Fna can feel chaotic and touts are persistent near the souk entrances. Fes el-Bali is genuinely difficult without local knowledge: the 9,000-alley layout has defeated experienced travellers who assumed Google Maps would sort it out (it doesn’t, offline tiles or not). A half-day guided walk in Fes — which costs roughly MAD 300–500 for a licensed guide — is money well spent.
