Marrakech
Djemaa el-Fna souk quarter
The medina behind Djemaa el-Fna is Morocco's most famous maze of market lanes. It fans out from the square into distinct craft zones: Souk Semmarine for textiles and djellabas, Souk des Babouches for leather slippers, Souk Cherratine for saddles and leatherwork, and Souk Haddadine where blacksmiths hammer lanterns on the street. Expect to walk for hours. Prices start high for tourists — your first offer should be around 30–40% of the ask, then work up to 50–60% as a fair landing point. Budget shoppers find good value on scarves (from 50 MAD / ~$5) and ceramics (from 80 MAD / ~$8 per piece). The spice souk near Rahba Kedima sells dried rose petals, ras el hanout blends and kohl by weight.

Local tip: Go before 10 am or after 4 pm — the lanes are cooler and the touts are fewer.
