Absolutely — and most people who skip it regret it instantly when they see the photos from those who went. The sunrise over Erg Chebbi is not subtle: the light turns the dunes through three or four distinct colours in around 20 minutes, from deep violet through amber to bleached gold. It happens fast. The reward for dragging yourself out of a warm sleeping bag at 5:30 am is one of the genuinely spectacular natural moments in Morocco. If you are staying at a desert camp, you have already done 80% of the work — the dunes are right there.

The high ridge of Erg Chebbi, directly east of Merzouga village, is the best single spot. The dunes there reach around 150 metres and the main ridge faces east across an open horizon with no obstructions. Camps positioned inside the dune field can point you to a crest within 15–20 minutes of walking from your tent. If you are staying in Merzouga town rather than in a camp, hire a local guide or join a camel ride organised by your accommodation — navigating the dunes in the dark is disorienting without someone who knows the terrain.

Most standard and luxury desert camps at Erg Chebbi include a sunset camel trek into camp on arrival, and a sunrise option to either walk or ride back at dawn. The camel ride back at sunrise is usually included in the camp package, though sometimes it is listed as optional. Confirm when booking. If you want to go UP a high dune for the actual sunrise (rather than riding at dune level), plan to leave your tent on foot about 25–30 minutes before local sunrise time — the camel handler can hold the camels while you climb.

It varies significantly with the season. In December and January, sunrise is around 07:45–08:00 local time, which means a relatively comfortable wake-up. In April and October — the most popular months for desert visits — sunrise is roughly 06:20–07:10. In summer (June–August) it can be as early as 05:50, though very few tours operate in peak summer heat. Your camp or tour guide will always brief you on the wake-up time the night before, so you do not need to calculate it yourself.

Colder than almost every visitor expects. The Sahara at Merzouga can drop to 2–5°C on winter nights (December–February), and even in October and March temperatures at pre-dawn are often 8–14°C with a wind chill from the open dunes. Bring a fleece or down layer, a scarf, and closed shoes — you will be standing still on a dune for 20–30 minutes as the light develops. Many camps provide blankets for the camel ride, but they do not always have enough for everyone, so packing your own light layer is wise.

Technically yes — the dunes are not restricted land — but it is not recommended if you are unfamiliar with the terrain. Erg Chebbi looks simple from the edge, but the ridgelines twist, the paths between dunes are confusing in the dark, and it is easy to end up facing west instead of east for the key moment. A local guide costs 100–200 MAD (indicative) for a morning walk and is worth every dirham for the navigation, the photography tips, and the context they bring. If you are already staying in a camp inside the dunes, ask your camp staff — they walk guests to the ridge every single morning.
