The High Dunes Ridge, Erg Chebbi (Merzouga)
The undisputed first choice. The main dune field at Erg Chebbi reaches around 150 metres and the ridgeline directly east of Merzouga village faces the sunrise perfectly. You climb 20–30 minutes in the dark to reach the crest, where the horizon is an unbroken line of sand — no palm trees, no buildings, nothing but the gradual shift from indigo to burnt orange to white gold. This is the view on every Sahara postcard.
Getting There
From Merzouga village: 25-minute camel trek or 15-minute walk. Desert camps in the dunes position you within 10 minutes of a good ridge. Best months: October–April.
Photographer's Tip
Go higher than you think you need to. The first ridgeline looks impressive from below but gives a flat, featureless foreground in photos. Push an extra 10 minutes to the secondary crest for layered dune shadows.
