For a wider environmental shot including the canyon walls and river below, scramble up the southern slope 30–50 metres — no technical climbing required. A polariser helps reduce the haze that builds by mid-morning. Avoid midday: harsh overhead light flattens the texture that makes the weathered rock so compelling.

A private driver or guided vehicle gives you a real advantage here. The R704 gorge road is narrow and potholed in sections, demanding full attention while driving — which means you miss prime pull-over moments. A local driver knows exactly where to stop, can handle the goats-on-road situations calmly, and will wait patiently at viewpoints while you work the light. Self-driving is feasible in a small car or 4x4 (a standard sedan struggles on the upper sections), but you will lose shooting time to navigation and parking stress. Indicative car hire from Ouarzazate runs around 400–700 MAD per day for a basic vehicle, not including a guide.

Yes — the Skoura palmery is open to independent visitors. Follow the signposted track to Kasbah Amerhidil from the N10 highway and pay the nominal entry fee (around 20 MAD, indicative) for access to the kasbah and its immediate grounds. The wider palmery is criss-crossed with unmarked tracks and it is easy to get disoriented among the palm rows, so a local palmery guide for 100–150 MAD (indicative) is worth it to reach the best reflection channels and avoid trespassing on private irrigation land. For interior kasbah shots and access to inhabited compounds, a guide with local relationships makes a significant difference.

Two full days is the practical minimum if you want to shoot each major stop at its best light. Day one: drive from Ouarzazate or Marrakech, stop at Skoura at dawn or in late afternoon, overnight in Boumalne Dades. Day two: dawn shoot up the gorge (monkey fingers, S-bends), return for breakfast, then drive east to Kelaat Mgouna and the Valley of the Roses before continuing to your next destination (Todra Gorge or Tinghir). Three days lets you add a sunset and a dawn at the same location — the Aït Arbi kasbahs in particular look completely different at each end of the day and deserve both sessions.

A versatile zoom (24–105 mm or equivalent) handles most situations — wide for canyon overviews and kasbah facades, longer for isolating towers and compressing gorge depth. A polariser is essential for the palm-grove reflections and for managing haze on the gorge rim shots. Bring a small tripod or beanbag for the pre-dawn shoots when ISO choices get painful; the formations need 1/15 s or slower in low light to keep shadow detail. Dust is omnipresent on the valley roads — keep spare sensor wipes and a weatherproofed bag. A wide-angle prime (20–24 mm) is excellent for the claustrophobic upper gorge sections.
