The Moroccan medina is not chaotic. It only feels that way because it was built according to a planning logic that most Western visitors have never encountered — one that prioritised sacred space, acoustic comfort, trade efficiency, and family privacy over a legible street grid. Once you understand the system, the apparent labyrinth resolves into something remarkably coherent.
The word medina simply means "city" in Arabic, but in the Moroccan context it has come to mean the old walled urban core, built before European colonial rule introduced rectilinear city planning alongside it. Morocco has nine UNESCO-listed medinas — Fes el-Bali, Marrakech, Meknes, Tétouan, Essaouira, Mazagan (El Jadida), Aït Benhaddou, Rabat, and Chefchaouen — each a variation on the same underlying model.
What follows is a zone-by-zone breakdown of how a classical Moroccan medina is organised, why it was built that way, and what to look for when you are walking through one.

The Mosque Core
Every classical medina radiates outward from its congregational mosque. In Fes that is the Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 CE; in Marrakech it is the Koutoubia, visible from almost anywhere in the city. Attached or nearby you will find a madrasa (Quranic school), a hammam for ritual purity, and a public fountain. This cluster is not accidental — Islamic urban theory held that the mosque should be the geographic and spiritual heart of the city.
The Souk Belt
Immediately around the mosque you find the most prestigious and aromatic trades: booksellers, perfumers, and candle-makers — chosen because sacred spaces deserved dignified neighbours. Moving outward, trades become noisier and messier: fabric merchants, brass-beaters, leather workers, blacksmiths, and finally dyers and tanners at the medina’s edge, where water access and the foul smells could be managed. Walk any medina with this in mind and the layout suddenly makes sense.
The Funduq
Scattered through the souk zone you will find funduqs (sometimes spelled foundouks): two-storey courtyards where itinerant merchants stored goods on the ground floor and slept in rooms above. Fes el-Bali alone once had over 200. Many have been repurposed as workshops, artists' studios, or boutique guesthouses, but the courtyard layout is unmistakable. The Funduq el-Nejjarine in Fes is the best-preserved example and now houses a woodworking museum.
The Derb
Beyond the commercial belt lie the derbs: dead-end residential alleyways that could be gated at night for security and privacy. A derb typically served an extended family network or a community of shared origin — merchants from the same Saharan trading town, refugees from the same Andalusian city. The gate gave residents control over who entered. This is why navigating a medina feels like threading a maze: the residential quarters were deliberately designed to exclude strangers.
The concentric model is universal; the details are local. Fes el-Bali, founded in the 8th century and expanded by Andalusian and Tunisian refugees in the 9th, is the most complete surviving example — two rival settlements that merged, producing a medina split by the Fes River with the Qarawiyyin Mosque as its anchor. Fes is also where you can still trace the trade-zone logic most clearly: the perfume souk (Souk al-Attarine) sits directly beside the mosque; the Chouara tanneries are at the far edge near the city wall.
Marrakech, founded in 1070 CE by the Almoravid dynasty, follows the same principles but on flatter ground and at larger scale. The Koutoubia Mosque anchors the western medina; the souks cascade north of Jemaa el-Fna in a rough gradient from tourist crafts near the square to more specialised trades deeper in. The Mellah (Jewish quarter, established 1558) and the royal palace complex (Dar el-Makhzen) add layers that alter the classical model without erasing it.
Meknes, Rabat, and Tetouan each preserve strong Andalusian influences in their residential architecture — the refugees expelled from Córdoba in 1492 and 1609 brought whitewashed courtyard houses, elaborate geometric tilework, and carved stucco traditions that became defining features of northern Moroccan cities.
The tallest minaret marks the Friday mosque — the geographic centre. Orient yourself relative to it and the layout begins to make sense.
Move toward incense and fresh bread to reach the mosque zone. Move toward dye or leather to reach the outer workshops. It works reliably in every major medina.
If the lane ends in a door, you have left the commercial zone and entered a residential derb. Turn back — you are in private space.

The most revealing walk you can do in any Moroccan medina is to start at the main mosque, move through the inner souk belt, then gradually spiral outward toward the city walls. In Fes, that means walking from the Qarawiyyin through the al-Attarine spice souk, past the Nejjarine fountain and woodwork funduq, into the copper and brass lanes, and eventually reaching the Chouara tanneries — a journey of perhaps 800 metres that crosses twelve centuries of deliberate urban design. Allow two to three hours, bring comfortable shoes, and seriously consider hiring a local guide for at least part of the route; the derb system will defeat most maps and GPS signals.
A private guided tour makes this kind of thematic walk far more rewarding than self-guided exploration. A good guide will point out features you would walk past — the cedar-carved madrasa ceilings, the way light falls into courtyard riads at noon, the neighbourhood hammam that has operated continuously since the 14th century — and provide the historical context that turns architecture into story.
The difficulty is intentional. The residential quarter of a medina — the derbs — was designed as a series of dead-end lanes that could be gated and controlled by the families who lived there. Outsiders were not meant to navigate it easily. The commercial souk zone is more open, but even there the lanes narrow and fork in ways that reflect centuries of organic growth between fixed anchor points like mosques and funduqs. The best way to understand the layout, and to stop feeling lost, is to walk with a local guide who can explain which zone you are in and why.
A classical Moroccan medina follows a concentric logic: the Friday mosque and its associated madrasa sit at the geographic centre; the most prestigious trades (booksellers, perfumers, spice merchants) form a belt immediately around it; noisier and messier crafts (brass-beaters, leather workers, potters) occupy the middle ring; and residential derbs fill the outer zones. Markets serving the most people — grain, vegetables, daily goods — are often found near the main city gates, where traffic from outside converges. Every major medina in Morocco, from Fes and Marrakech to Meknes and Tetouan, follows some version of this layout.
A derb is a narrow, often dead-end lane in the residential quarter of a medina, typically home to a cluster of families who share a common gate. The word comes from the Arabic for "path" or "way." Derbs were gated at night and sometimes during Friday prayers, giving residents control over access. Inside a derb, the houses face inward onto the lane with high, plain walls and minimal windows — all privacy, light, and greenery is directed into the internal courtyard (riad), away from public view. They remain private spaces today; you should not enter one unless you are a guest or guided there.
The trade-by-zone arrangement of souks has both practical and religious roots. Practically, grouping the same trade let buyers compare quality and prices and made guild regulation easier — the city’s muhtasib (market inspector) could oversee honesty in weights and craftsmanship by walking one lane. Religiously, the trades closest to the mosque needed to be dignified: booksellers and candle-makers were welcome; tanners and blacksmiths, with their noise and smell, were pushed to the edge. Today in Fes you can walk from the spice souk to the copper souk to the henna souk by following a rough outward spiral from the Qarawiyyin — the medieval logic is still spatially intact.
A funduq (also fondouk or caravanserai) was the medina’s commercial hotel: a two-storey courtyard building where travelling merchants stored goods on the ground floor and slept in the rooms above. They were built near the main souk lanes so trade could happen quickly. Fes once had more than 200 funduqs serving merchants from across the Sahara and the Mediterranean. Today many have become workshops — the Funduq el-Nejjarine in Fes, with its elaborately carved cedar facade and central fountain, is the most famous survivor and is open to visitors as a woodworking museum. Entry is typically around 20–30 MAD (indicative).
Fes el-Bali was founded in approximately 789 CE by Moulay Idriss I on the east bank of the Fes River, with a second settlement added on the west bank shortly after. The two towns merged and expanded rapidly after 818–28 CE when thousands of refugees arrived from Córdoba and Kairouan, bringing with them Andalusian and Tunisian urban planning traditions. There was no single architect — the medina grew through the layering of mosques, funduqs, residential derbs, and guild souks over several centuries. The Marinid dynasty (13th–15th century) added the most significant monuments: the Bou Inania Madrasa, al-Attarine Madrasa, and key funduqs. The result is organic but structured, and Fes el-Bali’s medina is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
