Marrakech → Zagora / Erg Chigaga
The road climbs almost immediately out of Marrakech, winding up the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) through red-earth Berber villages and dramatic switchbacks. After the pass you drop into the pre-Saharan plains around Ouarzazate, where the sandstone Kasbah of Aït Benhaddou crumbles photogenically across the Ounila River. From Ouarzazate the N9 follows the Draa Valley south — a long corridor of date palms and mud-brick ksour that softens the heat. You reach Zagora town in roughly four hours from Marrakech; M'Hamid, the last paved settlement, is another hour and a half beyond. From M'Hamid, reaching Erg Chigaga requires 35 km of piste — sandy track that a 4x4 handles easily, but which is not suitable for rental saloons.
