Merzouga vs Zagora: Which Is Closer to Marrakech?

The drive from Marrakech to Zagora takes roughly 4–5 hours (around 280 km), crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass and descending into the Draa Valley. The road is paved the whole way. Most tours stop at Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate en route, so a realistic door-to-desert arrival is about 6–7 hours of real travel time with stops. That makes Zagora genuinely doable in two days from Marrakech, with a night in the desert area before returning the following afternoon.

Marrakech to Merzouga is about 560 km and takes 8–9 hours of non-stop driving — though nobody does it non-stop. With a lunch break, photos at Aït Benhaddou, a walk in the Todra Gorge and a stop for mint tea, you are looking at a full day on the road. That is why virtually all Merzouga tours from Marrakech are structured as a minimum three-day itinerary: one day driving south, one night and morning in the dunes, and a long day driving back (or continuing north to Fes).

Yes — if two days is your hard limit, Zagora is the right choice. You leave Marrakech at 7 am, cross the Atlas, stop at Aït Benhaddou for an hour, reach M'Hamid or Zagora town by early afternoon, and transfer to an Erg Chigaga desert camp (the last 35 km requires a 4x4 on piste). The following morning you ride a camel at sunrise, then drive home. The dunes at Chigaga are smaller than Erg Chebbi, but the landscape is genuinely wild and far less crowded. It is a real Sahara experience, just a different register than Merzouga.

Technically possible — it is 4–5 hours each way — but not something most people enjoy. You would spend around 9–10 hours driving for perhaps two hours on the ground, with no time for dunes, camels or the Draa palm oases that make the journey worthwhile. A day trip makes more sense to Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate (roughly 4 hours round-trip including stops). For any genuine desert experience near Zagora, a minimum of one overnight is essential. The good news is that a private 2-day trip is shorter and easier to organise than a full Merzouga circuit.

Zagora wins on pure logistics for a two-night break: closer, cheaper, quieter. Merzouga wins on spectacle: the Erg Chebbi dunes are among the most photogenic in the Sahara, and the village of Merzouga has a strong infrastructure of camps, guides and activities (quad biking, sandboarding, 4x4 tours). If you have three nights to spare, the extra drive to Merzouga is worth it. If you have two nights and want a real desert sleep under stars without the driving marathon, the Zagora–Chigaga route delivers that with less effort.

Indicative private tour prices (per person, based on two sharing a private vehicle with driver-guide and overnight camp) run from around 1,800–2,800 MAD ($180–$280) for a 2-day Zagora trip to 2,500–4,500 MAD ($250–$450) for a 3-day Merzouga itinerary. Prices vary significantly with camp quality (standard vs luxury glamping), group size and the season. Solo travellers pay more per head; groups of four or more bring the cost down considerably. Both figures are indicative — the actual price depends on specifics you agree at the time of booking.

Both routes start with the same High Atlas crossing via Tizi n'Tichka — a well-maintained but winding mountain pass. After Ouarzazate, the Zagora road follows the Draa Valley south on smooth tarmac all the way to M'Hamid. Getting into Erg Chigaga from M'Hamid then requires about 35 km of piste, which is why tours use a 4x4. The Merzouga route stays on paved road all the way to the village — you can arrive in a standard car — though the long stretches of straight road through the Draa and Dades valleys can be hypnotic in the heat. Neither route requires off-road capability for the main driving, but the Chigaga access is genuinely rough.
