Savon Beldi (Black Soap)
What it is
A dark, gel-like soap made from pressed olive pulp and water, fermented until the oils are rich and the texture is almost buttery. Unlike the hard black soap sold at airport gift shops, real savon beldi is soft — it scoops out of the tub rather than snapping.
How to spot the real thing
Press a finger into the surface: it should yield easily and smell deeply of olive, not perfume. Bright colours (green, red) usually signal added fragrance or dye. Traditional beldi ranges from dark brown to near-black.
Fair price
30–60 MAD per 200 g tub (indicative). Anything above 100 MAD for the same quantity is tourist pricing — negotiate or walk.
Where to buy
Pharmacy-style herboristeries in the medina, or cooperatives on the road to Fes. Avoid the shiny jars at the entrance to major souks — they are usually diluted with industrial soap base.
