Fes — tarz and geometric excellence
The Fes medina has several streets dedicated to textiles. Walk down Rue Talaa Kebira from Bab Bou Jeloud and you will pass workshops with artisans stitching in doorways — the light here is notoriously good for detailed work. The Ain Nokbi artisan quarter, about 2 km outside the medina walls near the Marinid tombs, is where larger workshops with fixed pricing operate; it is less atmospheric than the medina but more reliable for verifying provenance. Budget half a day for Fes shopping: the medina is dense and easy to get lost in, which is not a bad thing when you are looking for textiles.
Expect to pay 600–1,500 MAD for a quality hand-stitched tablecloth (indicative). Silk-thread pieces cost more than cotton; monochrome tarz work is generally less expensive than two-tone or coloured versions.
