Tangier Medina Neighbourhood Guide

The Grand Socco is the wide, slightly chaotic plaza where the Ville Nouvelle meets the medina gate. Taxis drop you at its edge, the Bab Fahs arch stands to one side and the ornate Cinema Rif faces the square from the other. It is noisy, busy and energising -- vendors sell produce from the Rif mountains and women in striped fouta wrap skirts move between stalls. This is where most visitors first inhale the medina, and it smells of orange blossoms, diesel and mint. Give yourself ten minutes here before you duck through the gate.

Push through the medina gate and follow the main lane downhill for five minutes: you arrive at Petit Socco, a narrow square ringed by old cafes with marble tables and nicotine-stained ceilings. In the mid-20th century this was ground zero for Tangier’s international zone -- Burroughs, Bowles and Kerouac all drank here. Cafe Central and Cafe Tingis are still operating and the coffee is cheap (12-15 MAD for a cafe casse). The square is compact enough that you will orbit it several times without meaning to.

• Pickpocketing is low but stay alert with valuables in busy patches

Rue es-Siaghine runs between the two Soccos and is Tangier’s main souq street -- jewellers, argan-oil sellers, jellaba vendors and the odd spice merchant. It is narrower than Marrakech’s souks and far less touristy, which means prices are closer to what locals pay. The streets perpendicular to this spine lead into quieter residential zones: whitewashed walls, wooden-lattice windows, the occasional street cat. Getting genuinely lost here is part of the experience; the medina is small enough that you always emerge somewhere recognisable within ten minutes.

The Kasbah sits above the medina on a promontory overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. You climb steep lanes from Petit Socco -- fifteen to twenty minutes, gaining maybe 60 metres in altitude. The Kasbah neighbourhood is wealthier and quieter than the rest of the medina: many houses have been restored by European buyers, bougainvillea tumbles over white walls and the alleys are wider. The Dar el-Makhzen palace at the centre now houses the Museum of Moroccan Arts, with zellige tilework, carved stucco and Andalusian garden courtyards (entry around 20 MAD). From the Kasbah walls you can see Spain on a clear day -- the distance across the strait is only 14 km.

Several streets in the lower medina are associated with Tangier’s 1950s and 60s literary scene. The American Legation Museum -- the only US National Historic Landmark on foreign soil -- sits on Rue d’Amerique and houses a surprisingly rich collection of Moroccan art and documents relating to Paul Bowles and the international zone era. It is often uncrowded and free (donations welcome). Rue de la Plage leads down toward the port and the beach boulevard; it is where you pick up the ferry smell and the salt air, and a good exit point if you are walking back to the port.
