Grand Socco (Place du 9 Avril 1947)
The threshold between old and new
The Grand Socco is the wide, slightly chaotic plaza where the Ville Nouvelle meets the medina gate. Taxis drop you at its edge, the Bab Fahs arch stands to one side and the ornate Cinema Rif faces the square from the other. It is noisy, busy and energising -- vendors sell produce from the Rif mountains and women in striped fouta wrap skirts move between stalls. This is where most visitors first inhale the medina, and it smells of orange blossoms, diesel and mint. Give yourself ten minutes here before you duck through the gate.
- Arrive by Petit Taxi from the port -- around 15-20 MAD
- Cinema Rif hosts arthouse screenings and a rooftop cafe
- The Mendoubia Gardens opposite are calm on weekday mornings
