Day 1
Imlil (1,740 m) → Refuge du Toubkal (3,207 m)
+1,467 m gain · ~10 km · 5–7 hrs
The trail begins at the car park on the edge of Imlil village, climbs through the Mizane Valley past the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch — a white-painted boulder wedged in the riverbed where locals leave offerings — and grinds steadily upward through scree slopes to the refuge. The last two kilometres feel steep and loose underfoot; poles earn their keep here. You arrive at the stone-built CAF refuge (3,207 m) by mid-afternoon with time to rest, eat the communal dinner and acclimatise before the summit push the next morning.
- Start by 07:30 from Imlil to avoid afternoon cloud
- Sidi Chamarouch is a natural rest point at ~2,310 m
- Refuge du Toubkal run by CAF — book months ahead in summer
- Dinner and breakfast usually included in refuge fee
